The seeds of Inshes Bookkeeping were sown during the first lockdown in March 2020. Founder Steven Robertson was working as an events organiser in the live music sector when Covid-19 brought the industry to a sudden standstill. Like many small business owners, he was forced to pause and rethink his future.
After more than 15 years working in live events, Steven had experienced the realities of running a small business first-hand — unpredictable income, cash-flow pressure, and the challenge of wearing multiple hats to keep going. These weren’t theoretical problems; they were lived experiences.
That period of uncertainty led to a simple idea: what if those experiences could be used to help sole traders and micro-companies avoid common pitfalls and feel more confident about their finances? This thought process ultimately inspired the creation of Inshes Bookkeeping, which specializes in personal bookkeeping services tailored to small businesses.
Steven went on to study Accounting & Finance at the University of the Highlands and Islands, gaining practical experience through work placements across the travel, hospitality, retail, and social enterprise sectors. After studying, he joined a national accounting firm, developing his skills in self-assessment, VAT returns, corporation tax computations, and annual accounts preparation. While the experience was invaluable, it confirmed something important — Steven wanted to work hands-on and directly with clients, building relationships and providing clear, practical support.
Inshes Bookkeeping was created to bring all of this together: lived small-business experience, professional accounting training, and a belief that small business bookkeeping should be personal, straightforward, and genuinely useful.
